Questions?

Two men practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu in gis indoors.

What’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

BJJ is a grappling based martial art that focuses on ground control, submissions and technique over strength. It teaches you how to defend yourself by using leverage, positioning, and timing - making it effective for all ages, sizes and skill levels.

What’s the Gi?

The Gi is a traditional uniform worn in BJJ, similar to a Judo kimono. Training in the Gi allows you to grip your opponent’s clothing for chokes, control and submissions, adding a unique technical layer to BJJ.

What’s Submission Grappling?

Submission grappling or also known as NOGI is a style of BJJ where you train without the tradition uniform (Gi). Instead shorts, t-shirts or rashguards are worn, similar to what you would see in MMA (without the punching).

What would a normal class look like?

A light warm up, technical section, specific drilling and situational sparring to finish.

What’s Rolling?

Rolling is the BJJ term for sparring - it’s live grappling with a partner where you both try to apply techniques in real time. The goal is to improve your control, escapes, submission and timing.

Beginners are eased in with control-focused situational sparring, not thrown in the deep end.

Is it safe?

Yes - BJJ is generally very safe, especially when taught in a controlled, respectful environment. Unlike striking arts BJJ focuses on grappling and submissions, which means there are no punches or kicks involved. The goal is to control your opponent and submit them, not cause damage.

Sparring is done at your own pace. Beginners are paired with experienced partners who focus on safety and control.
